Of sanskrit teachers , a great game , and selling CDs

Well , there are some things that remind you of some people . There was this sanskrit teacher who slapped me real hard in class VII . And it wasn't a slap in the traditional sense . She actually rained slaps like she wanted to slap my face into a chapati .Left.Right.Left.Right.So whenever I think 'slap' , I think 'Sanskrit teacher and a packed class watching me in pity'.
And I just discovered this. I am shaken to see so many ladies recount what they went through . I find myself thinking of my sister , female friends , cousions , and I am sickened by the thought that they may have their stories too. It must be so tough being a girl . Living a normal day as a girl . When just walking down a street is a fight to protect oneself .A simple trip in a public bus is fraught with violations .When simply being a woman is an invitation .And the worst part is that I don't see how anything can change .

In more real and terrific news , to the utter wonder of almost everyone except my parents , teachers and other people aware of my intellectual capabilities , I am still unemployed . At the end of the first day of placements , a TV channel van came over to the campus . Those guys filmed the students with perfectly formed teeth and high grades and glorious job offers in London and Hong Kong and telecast it to homes around the nation , including my aunt's in Indore and another aunt's in Patiala . So aunts and uncles who talked to me sometime when Jesus Christ was still a kid are calling me up and deeply regretting the fact that I am jobless in spite of being at IIM Calcutta . To keep their wonder meters going , I tell them I still have chances at a firm which is into painting traffic signs.

Infact I have applied to 40 companies . 34 of them are yet to visit the campus. Hopefully , the curious calls will subside the moment I get placed in one of them . Some folks understand that the entire placement thing is a process which lasts longer than a pulse polio advertisement . But the moment some people see the words IIM and placements together in a newspaper , they imagine me in a sleek and black business suit attending boardroom meetings in a glass building at New York and playing snooker over rounds of martini after office . But that's all right. In a land where some fifty year old man with fat enough to inspire 500 kilometers of jogging tracks , can yell "Gadhe ko khelna nahi ata !" at a shot played by Sachin on TV , any other misconception is almost negligble . But this entire placements process is something which is much beyond the screaming headlines read by people over cups of coffee . Some other time.

And if you thought the first day first show audience of Neal and Nikki was the unluckiest bunch of homo sapiens ever , change that to the bowlers community of Australia and South Africa. The most unbelievable game which could have made a lamp post scream out in excitement .

Have got the entire game highlights on my disk.If I don't land a job soon , am gonna burn the game on CDs and sell them at Palika Bazar in Delhi .That should earn me enough to send my kids to a decent english medium school with no sanskrit teachers around. Much better than painting 'Slow down , school ahead' road signs for a living .

What a match, I mean WHAT A MATCH dude!!!!!!!!!! :)

Between, hey U'll not need to paint any of those boards bhai, on the contrary, there wud b boards put up in IIMC which wud b like "Rush soon, Abhinav ahead - He's still available" :)

The same question is being asked from the seniors, who in not so distant past got much lesser salary and even lesser hikes.

Neighours think - this guy must be rolling in greens every night but why can't be buy a house or a car just like that.

Parents think - He must be hiding is real salary from us.

Siblings Think - He is just nice in not mentioning his real salary ad making us feel small

He thinks - God - why didn't he do MBA 2 years late.

Anonymous said...

An after thought to previous one -

Law of averages state that is average is 9.0 and max is 32 lakhs (domestic), then there will be people getting as low as 4-5. If media turns the cameras to the lesser mortals, it will put the whole world in right perspective.

Hmm...It is irritating sometimes to see media blow out of proportions the salaries pl get at IIMs. I mean come on the guy may have gotten a worse deal than what he may have got if he'd have been woring at some place at NY after a IIT and berk.degree. Anyways who cares! I am sure you'll get a good job and hey you are already famous ...your blog got linked to an article at Rediff (http://in.rediff.com/getahead/2006/mar/22rashmi.htm)
:D ...see everything is not that gloomy!

sandeepmoonka said...

the media only wants to sensitise the whole thing.the placement process has got a much bigger picture than actually presented.why dont the media explains the profile of students getting such high perks? gaurav agarwal holds an MS and also two years of work expr and the icing on the cake is his IIT-tag.

Anonymous said...

Really well writen buddy!
This IIM salary is a curse for people like me who are at a B Grade B School. My parents think I am a loser!

HI!

I landed to your blog following the above link. And I really learnt a lot. (especially from your reply about the 18L and 10L salary).

Thanks for the fundaes and good time I spent at your blog.

himanshujovi said...

gr8 blog dude.. how very true that one gaurav agarwal inspires the whole generation to go for a course. but wat the ppl dont realize that the package he is getting is not just becaus of the IIM tag but also the other qualifications for which he might have worked hard in oblivion..

anywayz IIM`s enjoy ur moment of glory as long as it lasts..

PS :- I m not some bitter IIM basher , in fact I was also a IIM aspirant but then soon realized that the cut throat competetion , the scramble for the ever elusive 99.9% percentile, the unprofessional competetion in the B School to the get the CGPA .Is it really worth it.. ? I m earning enough to take care of my daily needs, enjoy some indulgences, support my parents sometimes.

So why the bother for the fat $$$ paychecks , when I can say for sure that when I have them I wont have the single most important to enjoy them TIME .

I know I might be sounding stupid in this times of privatisation. But I believe that we have only one life and lets not waste it on $$$ paychecks, foreign assignments and miss out the simple things of life like waking up to seeing ur frnds, hanging out at evenings with them ...

I can understand your predicaments. My dad passed out of IIT-K and my grand mom used to ask, "tu kharagpur kab jaa rahaa hai?". My relatives never thought that being my CEO father's son, I would study at any place lesser than an IIT.
Today I am pursuing an MBA at one of US's top schools. I just landed an internship which when converted full-time, could potentially translate to a 125K package. I heard this, "arre US mein itna kharcha karke itna hi milega kya? Yahaan to IIM sey assi lakh milta hai".
I have a couple of very close friends at IIMC this year and it's interesting how misinformation and hype by the media is making life miserable for everyone.

Good luck! Keep the faith.

ps: I had to make a tough decision of whether to join IIM or the US school. Looks like it did not matter.

What is with sanskrit teachers and slapping? Even I have been slapped by a sanskrit teacher when I was in 8th standard. He was a crazy guy. It was one hard slap and later he comes up to me and says that I an slap him back if I want to. Till today, I do not know the reason he slapped me.

Sincerely hope this area definitely is the most suitable place to submit this... I just simply hoped to make it easy for people using the forum who lives in Oz know about a fabulous top quality audio visual equipment world wide web site named Ordio. I uncovered them actually by mistake when I was shopping around for Tvs and it just so happened that these people had the most reasonable prices available. Not only that but they are quite helpful and even followed up on my expenditure to make sure I was still satisfied and content. They actually buy out tremendous inventories of high end audio equipment so that they can seriously break the price down. Certainly visit their site if you're scouting for some home electronics.

This item is great for people w curly unruly hair. I have fine curly hair, just a lot of it - so sometimes products for curly thick (the folicle itself) do not give achieve the

results I want for my hair. The great thing is you only need a couple of pumps (too much can make your hair kind of hard - as if you were using a gel) and give you super defined curls w/o using gels,

hairsprays, individually twisting your curls, etc... It just gives you what you hope nature intended your hair to look like, w/o looking like you have a product in your hair - It has a nice mild smell and

gives you soft and bouncy curls - I use it to style and comb my hair (when wet) and then finish with a bit of MoroccanOil and have hair that looks great all day long
